Day 10: why university kids are awful.

The streetlights had flickered on
over the rolling sidewalks, down
the steep grade of Port Republic,
girls in small open clothes at 20
degrees. The night bus shuttled
into darkness. You wouldnt call
the students aboard it adults, or
near it, but children still, the fine
haze of alcohol, the sweating of
light beer, cheap, purchased for
a stipend. The boys in button-up
flannel postured, but you should
not expect more nor less from them:
barking idiocy to and fro, a long volley
of clipped anger, slurred ego, talk of
New Jersey, New Jersey without any
merit to be talked of. Pictures on a cell
phone of a girlfriend back home, perhaps,
one boy saying I’d have sex with that,
I’d fuck that,
in the quiet shame of the bus.

Man, this just reminds me of college so much. You really nailed it. We have a bus just like it (I figure most campuses do) and it’s funny to actually watch and listen sometime.

I think we’ve all been there. My novel is pretty much exclusively about this sort of posturing. And don’t worry about the last few entries. This is all about getting your bearings, learning what strikes you and what doesn’t. You can do this.
