In sixth grade he watched from the bench as his team lost in the first round of championship play, seventh and eighth grade as the team lost its key players and missed out on the postseason, throughout highschool, winning one title, sat on the bench, of course, in college in the stands, not skilled enough even for the university-level bench, on the sidelines of a poorly lit office building, too, carting cleaning supplies from one unused conference room to the next, mingled in the circle formed around the bleeding man, the man he stabbed, who coughed with tremendous violence, on a long bench in the police station, sat on the solid mahogany bench of the courtroom as he mistook his name for Guilty, and for eight years on a bench strapped over a cold concrete floor in his sockfeet, and, when his time comes, he’ll be benched then too.
